The differences between a mobility scooter and power wheelchair

mobility scooter vs power wheelchair

Why do people use a mobility scooter and not a power wheelchair?

  1. Looks Cool - A mobility scooter just looks cooler (some look super cool & even people that don't have a mobility issue buy them).
  2. Less Expensive - Scooters are normally less expensive than a power wheelchair.
  3. Less Complicated - Scooters are technically less complicated than power wheelchairs (hence, costs less).
  4. Less Expensive Parts - Scooter parts as a whole are less expensive (replacing the power wheelchair joystick controller can be very expensive - $1000's).
  5. Medicare - Its more difficult to get Medicare to approve and cover a mobility scooter.

Why do people use a power wheelchair and not a mobility scooter?

  1. Operation - The user can not physically operate the scooter handle bars and throttle but can easily operate a power chair joystick (can be very difficult for some users to get or keep their arms up on the scooter handle bars).
  2. Comfort - The user may have to spend more time in a power wheelchair (typical power chairs have more comfortable seats than scooters).
  3. Transferring - Its easier for a user to transfer from a bed or chair to a power wheelchair.
  4. Turning Radius - Most wheelchairs can spin on a dime and normally have a smaller footprint (good for around the house & you can get one with an elevating seat for cooking etc.).
  5. Medicare - Its easier to get Medicare to approve & cover a power wheelchair.
